The desert tortoise is an herbivore that can grow to a length of 9 to 15 inches in its upper shell length. They are known to live 60 to 80 years, some perhaps longer. Because of it's ability to burrow beneath the ground, The Desert Totoise is able to survive in extreme conditions where the ground temperture may exceed 140 degrees Fahrenheit. The Desert Tortoise of the Mojave islisted by the federal government as a threatened species, making it unlawful to touch, harm, harrass or collect a wild turtle.
