The last three minutes of “Desire and the Comforter” from Electric Dreams say it all about John McLaughlin. He just tears apart his electric guitar with cascades of funk, blues, rock, jazz, and Far-Eastern scales. Every strike of a string has individual meaning. His guitar soars above the chord changes and captures the spirit of the music. He leaves space (or texture) where it should be left. Like no other guitar player on earth, John McLaughlin knows when not to play, despite claims from those who say he plays too many notes. And even though there are a million notes a minute on this tune, the spaces in between the notes create the epiphany.
McLaughlin recorded Electric Dreams with the One Truth Band, which also included L. Shankar on violin, Tony Smith on drums, Stu Goldberg on keyboards, Fernando Saunders on bass, and Alyrio Lima handling various percussion duties. The OTB was a much more rhythmic unit than JM's previous bands, and although its members may not have been the “master” musicians like those who comprised The Mahavishnu Orchestra, they certainly knew how to “funk a groove”. Electric Dreams is full of such grooves and infectious tunes. Sure, we could have lived without the God-awful ”Love and Understanding”. But Electric Dreams offers the beautiful “Electric Dreams, Electric Sighs”, featuring JM on banjo! The classic �Dark Prince� is a brooding, straight-ahead jazz-fusion homage to Miles that overshadows the album�s other Miles tribute piece, �Miles Davis.”
On this recording, McLaughlin used a guitar that had a scalloped fret board. The concave spaces allowed McLaughlin to stretch notes beyond believability. A main component of the band's sound, Shankar's far-eastern violin, does seem ill placed at times, and Goldberg's synth patches are outdated in some areas as well. But, these issues actually endow the album with a bit of charm. The veterans Smith and Saunders make for a very steady rhythm section. Lima is more effective in concert than on this recording. Saxophonist David Sanborn, a guest star on several McLaughlin albums, makes a more than welcome guest appearance on the haunting Unknown Dissident.
The mix wasn't always successful. But on the whole, Electric Dreams offers some of the best composing and playing of McLaughlin's career and has been unfairly overlooked.

Jack nasceu no dia 9 de julho de 1975 em Detroit. Um dos dez filhos de uma família católica, Jack aprendeu a tocar piano, guitarra e bateria. Participou de várias bandas quando adolescente, entre elas The Go e Two Star Tabernacle. Com 17 anos foi trabalhar no estúdio Muldoon e lá conheceu o dono, Brian Muldoon, com quem formou uma banda, mas não durou muito tempo.
Na mesma época ele conheceu uma garçonete chamada Meg White, que se tornou sua grande parceira. Em 1996, eles se casaram e, no ano seguinte, iniciaram a carreira musical com o nome de The White Stripes - ele na guitarra, ela na bateria e ambos nos vocais - sempre com roupas brancas e vermelhas, a dupla tem agradado crítica e fãs, com seu rock alternativo influenciado pelo punk, folk e blues.
O primeiro registro da dupla de Detroit, nos Estados Unidos, chegou em 1999, “White Stripes”. Foram dois anos seguidos em turnê, ao lado de Pavement e Sleater-Kinney, o que ajudou bastante a divulgar o disco nacionalmente. Os lançamentos de “De Stijl” (2000) e “White Blood Cells” (2001) aumentaram o reconhecimento da dupla e a turnê se tornou internacional, incluindo Austrália e Japão.
As conseqüências profissionais foram ótimas, participaram de programas de grande audiência, foram tema matérias em revistas conceituadas e receberam críticas positivas, mas na parte pessoal, a convivência não fez muito bem para o casamento que terminou na época de “De Stijl”. A música “Fell in Love Girl” ganhou uma versão em videoclipe feita somente com peças do brinquedo Lego. Não podia ser diferente, o clipe foi indicado a quatro categorias do MTV Video Music Award, incluindo melhor clipe do ano.
O ano de 2003 foi bem especial para o White Stripes. Jack compôs para a trilha sonora de “Cold Mountain” e atuou no filme. O disco que consolidou de vez a carreira da dupla, “Elephant”, também foi lançado no mesmo ano e o álbum vazou pela Internet duas semanas antes de ser lançado, mas não prejudicou as vendas, permanecendo no topo da parada britânica e entre os 20 mais tocados nos Estados Unidos.
Gravado em apenas duas semanas, o disco se espalhou pelo mundo e recebeu inúmeras críticas positivas. No Grammy 2004 o resultado do trabalho: quatro indicações. Receberam dois prêmios, melhor álbum de música alternativa e melhor canção para “Seven Nation Army”.
Em 2004, Jack e o vocalista do Von Bondies, Jason Stollsteinmer, se desentenderam. O motivo da briga foi que Jason falou mal de Jack. Após assumir a culpa de ter agredido Jason, Jack se livrou da prisão, mas terá que participar de um programa de controle de raiva. Já Meg esteve na capa de um single da banda Whirlwind Heat, em que ela aparece vestida de coelha.
A parceria com a banda foi mais longe, Jack foi o produtor do disco de estréia deles e Meg esteve no Brasil para acompanhar a banda em uma apresentação no Tim Festival - tudo indica que a dupla não vai parar tão cedo.
