Just as I am - Acoustic Fingerstyle Guitar Solo

[照我本相]

I found this worship Gospel Hymn from Mel Bay Favorite Hymns for Acoustic Guitar by Rick Foster. It was written by Charlotte Elliott in 1835, and beautifully arranged by Chet Atkins for acoustic fingerstyle solo guitar. You can read about the history of this hymn on Wiki.

This piece is using CGDGBE tuning (6=C, 5=G) to produce extra bass boost. I have the tab link in my Acoustic Fingerstyle Guitar Hymn Tabs section.

Lyrics

Just as I am - without one plea,
But that Thy blood was shed for me,
And that Thou bidst me come to Thee,
-O Lamb of God, I come!

Just as I am - and waiting not
To rid my soul of one dark blot,
To Thee, whose blood can cleanse each spot,
-O Lamb of God, I come!

Just as I am - though toss'd about
With many a conflict, many a doubt,
Fightings and fears within, without,
-O Lamb of God, I come!

Just as I am - poor, wretched, blind;
Sight, riches, healing of the mind,
Yea, all I need, in Thee to find,
-O Lamb of God, I come!

Just as I am - Thou wilt receive,
Wilt welcome, pardon, cleanse, relieve;
Because Thy promise I believe,
-O Lamb of God, I come!

Just as I am - Thy love unknown
Has broken every barrier down;
Now to be Thine, yea, Thine alone,
-O Lamb of God, I come!

Just as I am - of that free love
The breadth, length, depth, and height to prove,
Here for a season, then above,
-O Lamb of God, I come!

Yesterday - The Beatles, it is live on Youtube

Initially I thought this short and easy fingerstyle arrangement shouldn't take me more than one hour to practice, but my first impression was wrong. Even though the chord shapes (open chord C, F, G and some variations) are not difficult, it takes hours of hard work to achieve smooth chord changes (for me at least). I have listed a few tips I learned from my practice sessions below. My playing is still raw but you get the idea. Tab can be found in my Free Acoustic Fingerstyle Tabs section. Download MP3
Performance Notes
  • Let ring of all bass notes, hold notes down as long as possible until next note change
  • From 00:13 to 00:14, I use my pinky to hammer down and then pulled off with my pinky and 4th finger
  • From 00:16 to 00:18, need to quickly change chord from power chord F to F on 5th fret (xxx565), then move down to open G
  • Repeat the same pattern from 00:34 again
  • From 00:52 to 00:59, there are five chord changes (Am G7 F Em Dm) that require some practice to get them down, and then you need to quickly shift down to open G.
  • Similiar pattern from 01:05 to 01:09
  • From 01:10 to 01:13,  smooth shift from C (8xx989) to Csus4 (x3x011)
